SYNOPSIS

In the aftermath of the first Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip in 2008/2009, 33 girls and boys from Gaza wrote down their experiences during the war. The project, initiated by the Ramallah based ASHTAR Theatre, resulted in a theatre play called „The Gaza Mono-Logues“. Since 2010 to date, “The Gaza Mono-Logues” have been presented in more than 80 cities in 40 countries, including at the headquartes of the United Nations.

Since 2006 the Gaza Strip is under siege. Travelling into or out of Gaza is strongly controlled by Israel and permitted only in very rare cases. Since 2013 also the Rafah-Crossing to Egypt has mostly been closed. Therefore, nearly all of the worldwide performances of „The Gaza Monolo-Logues“ had to be conducted by the ASTHAR ensemble from Ramallah. The young actors and actresses from Gaza could get out only twice to present their monologues to the world.

After 2010 there have been two more wars in Gaza so far, one in 2012, one in 2014. The attack in 2014 lasted 50 days and left around 2200 people dead, most of them civilians.

In July 2016 seven actresses and actors from Gaza have been invited by ASHTAR Theatre to perform “The Gaza Mono-Logues” at its Third International Youth Festival in Ramallah, West Bank. For all of them it would be the first time ever to visit the other part of Palestine, only 1,5 hours drive away. Whether they will be able to participate or not and how many of them will be decided by Israeli authorities.

Our film accompanies seven amazing young actresses and actors in and outside the theatre. We wait with them for the decision about their permit to travel to Ramallah and learn what it means for a young person to live in Gaza, under occupation, siege and with a war in every three years. But we also hear about the beautiful things in Gaza, about love and the importance of theatre and art.
